Recently I've attempted to make a better effort to be more conciencious of my waste with health and beauty products. With all of the different products that are being introduced constantly comes tons and tons of containers that are just thrown away after they are used up (and I use ALOT.) So of course coming across a shop that encourages reusable glass containers and cloth pouches was a nice breath of fresh air. The Refill Shoppe is located at 363 E Main Street and like most shops in Ventura the doors are a little tucked away from the street's sidewalk. As I walked in I noticed some really cute items that were perfect for gift ideas like market bags and incense which is a total score because I love to stock up on items like this when I can for when I do custom gift baskets.
The Refill Shoppe makes it super easy for someone who's new with instructions displayed throughout the store or their super friendly staff is on hand to help walk you through the process. Customers can bring in a pre-cleaned container or choose one of the bottles/ jars that the shop has available on their shelves. They carry a wide variety of bottles, some super fun and colorful with unique designs but for those more into the simple aesthetic they have clear and amber bottles to choose from. Since refills are sold by the ounce, the bottle that you choose or that you bring in gets weighed and marked prior to filling.
There's a ton of products to choose from shampoos/ conditioners, hand soaps, lotions, dog soap (that's right they have something for your fur baby) and so many other products. One of the cool parts about The Refill Shoppe is that several of their products are gluten free and organic which to me means that they are less harmful on your hair and body especially since there's no additives. Once you've selected the product that you want and fill the jar 3/4 full you can select up to 6 different essential oils and or fragrances. Of course i was drawn to the colorful bottles but I ultimately got an amber bottle because I love the way it looks in my bathroom cabinet (I know.. I know..)
Finding the right scents/ fragrances are so important and with most beauty products focused on sweet scents they aren't a personal preference. As much as I love roses and grapefruit you won't catch me wearing the fragrances (I've tried it with lotions, perfumes, etc and lets just say it's not an attractive scent for me). The shop has a bunch of different scents that you can mix and try on your skin to see if you like the different combinations. This part was definitely my favorite, and one of the cool tricks the staff did was putting together a combo based on my preference and held the bottles up with the caps off and had a mini fan to project the scent (genius!) After adding the oils that I chose I capped the bottle, shook it up, topped it off with a little more product and labeled it and just like that I had made my own custom shower gel! :)
I still have a ways to go in converting the rest of my beauty products to eco-friendly containers but this is a good start. There's so much more to explore in this store and every time I go back I learn something new and at the same time I get to be a little bit of a scientist experimenting with products and scents. I highly recommend checking out The Refill Shoppe out and bringing someone along since it's prefect to run your errands and hang with your friends.
